Opinion: Was Automatic Promotion a Realistic Prospect? A surprising win against Halifax and an expected loss against Solihull left us dreaming of a summer rebuild under the command of Paul Cook. The additions of Ollie Banks and Armando Dobra lead us into wonderland and dreams of an automatic promotion out of the National League. Little did we know at the time, that across the borders, much like the armies of Sauron, a threat to that dream was growing, unbeknown to the Spireites at the time! Armando Dobra had a night to Remember! As the final whistle blew at the Technique stadium, and the roar of 2000 travelling Notts County supporters signalled Chesterfield’s fourth successive National League defeat, anyone perusing the final score charts this weekend might be forgiven for assuming that the mood around the Spireites fanbase just had sunk to a new low. But for me, that’s just not the case; I now feel e ven more confident of Chesterfield’s promotion chances this season than I did going into the clash against the league leaders. Supporters of other sides might laugh at this point of view on the back of a defeat. MATCH PREVIEW: SOLIHULL MOORS (A) Chesterfield travel to Solihull Moors this weekend looking to put a stop to their 5-game winless run. The Spireites haven’t tasted victory since a 1-0 win over Altrincham on 24 January, a run which has seen them slip to fourth place in the National League. This weekend’s opponents were strongly tipped to be in the race for the top three this season after reaching the playoff final last June. However, Neal Ardley’s side have struggled to live up to expectations thus far, and currently occupy 12th position - four points behind 7th placed Boreham Wood. Chesterfield return to a stadium they played at twice last season - winning 3-2 in the National League before a crushing 3-1 defeat in the playoff Semi-Final condemned the Blues to another season in the fifth tier.
